Pure Joy – Mixed Media Cupcake

I finally had a little time to finish my second mixed media cupcake. You can find the first here: Find Your Bliss – Mixed Media Cupcake

I made this one pretty much the same as the last using an 8″ square canvas with layers of paint and paper. Bright Easter colors were my inspiration for the background on this canvas.

First I started by coating the canvas with gesso. Next I adhered pieces of text from an old book and a paper doily to my canvas. I painted the background with watered down bright colored acrylic paints in yellow, pink, blue, purple and orange.

After everything dried, I used a recycled cylinder and the end of a dowel dipped in white acrylic paint to make a few designs on my canvas. I also stamped a few flowers using Black Staz On Ink.

For the border, I cut strips of paper from my book and used a scallop punch for the inside edge. The pages of the book weren’t long enough, so I had to overlap alternating corners to make it work. Once I adhered these to the canvas, I added buttons with baker’s twine to the top and bottom edges. Next I drew few doodles with my Sakura Micron #03 pen and colored them in with Sakura Gelly Roll Pens.

I sketched the cupcake on to the center of the canvas and painted it with acrylic paints. I adhered my tag and then added highlights and shading to entire canvas.  I liked how the clear glitter paint added that little bit of bling to my last cupcake, so I decided to use it again on frosting and that was it!

Hope you enjoy!

Spooky Halloween Mixed Media Village

Created by Sophia Vida

I know this post is a little late, but I decided to create this Village the night before Halloween and there just wasn’t enough time to get it done. But at least I’m ready for next year!

To start, I  gave the canvas a coat of gesso. Then I painted it using acrylic paints in dark blue, medium and light purple. To add a few highlights, I used metallic pearl white acrylic paint. It’s pretty sheer and that’s exactly what I wanted.

I made the moon in two layers. First I sprayed white tissue paper and a white lace paper doily with yellow and orange Angel Glimmer Mist and let them dry. Next I cut out a circle from each for the moon and adhered them on the canvas using Matte Mod Podge with the lace doily on top.

While that was drying, I began cutting my creepy houses, windows, roofs and doors from the cardstock. The papers in this village all came from the same stack, DCWV The Spooky Time. Once everything was cut, I adhered the pieces to the canvas with the Matte Mod Podge. I sketched scribbly lines around the edges of all the parts of the houses to make them stand out a little more with the Faber Castell Pitt Pen. I added accents to the canvas with a purple glitter Gelly Roll Pen and Inka Gold Violet Paint.  This was the first time I used the Inka Gold Paint. It’s a paste paint that is packaged in a small tub and dries fairly quickly. I love the consistency and how it looks on the canvas!

Last I added a few embellishments like rhinestones and stickers from various Halloween packs I had on hand and Voila! I had a unique Spooky Village!

Enjoy creating your own village!!

Mixed Media Art Journal – Take 5

Happy November! I can’t believe Thanksgiving is just around the corner. Not sure I’m quite ready for all the holidays just yet. It seems they come faster and faster every year.

On a more fun note, I wanted to share my new journal pages with you. Journaling is a perfect place to showcase your artwork which is what I did on these two pages. I had created these two tags using Angel Mist Sprays, stamp embossing and various embellishments. Although they were a lot of fun to make, I really didn’t have a use for them so I thought it would be fun to give them a permanent home in my journal.

I painted the backgrounds with dark blue and pink acrylic paints. Where the two colors mixed, the paint turned mostly purple which is what I wanted. But you can still see a few pink streaks here and there.

When I looked at the tags against the background they got lost, so I added highlights with gelatos. I accented the pages with white acrylic paint and doodled in the corners and around the tags with a white paint marker. Of course, I couldn’t resist finishing it off with a little bling, so I added Stickles and that was it!

Hope you enjoy!

And stay tuned as the journaling adventure continues…..

Thanks for stopping by!

I have several projects going on at the same time right now. Until those are finished I thought I would share this watercolor zentangle with you. As you know I love my bright colors and whimsical designs so this was perfect for me.

I painted this in my little 5.5″ x 8″ watercolor art journal. I drew my design in pencil first and then outlined it with a Sakura Micron Pen 03. I didn’t want to go too heavy on the zentangle designs because I wanted the focus to be more on the bright colors. So I colored it with the Kimberly and Derwent Inktense Watercolor Pencils. I activated the paint with my Niji Waterbrushes. Once it was dry I added shading and highlights. Last I added a little bling with Stickles and Voila! I had a new painting in my journal that was simply lots of fun!

Thanks for stopping by! Enjoy!!

I hope the New Year finds you in good spirits and health! I took a much needed break over the holidays and enjoyed spending time with my family. But I still found time to play in my watercolor journal and create a few projects that I’ll be sharing with you.

I made this cupcake on an 8″ canvas using layers of paint and paper. I was inspired by beautiful sunsets and used these colors in my palette. I started by giving my canvas a coat of gesso. Next I adhered pieces of sheet music, text from an old book and a paper doily to my canvas.

I then painted the background with watered down yellow, bright pink and orange acrylic paints. After this layer dried I used a recycled cylinder and the end of a paint brush  dipped in white acrylic paint to make a few designs on my canvas. I also stamped a few flowers using Black Staz On Ink.

For the border, I cut strips of paper from my book and used a scallop punch. The pages of the book weren’t long enough, so I had to overlap alternating corners to make it work. Once I adhered these to the canvas, I added buttons with baker’s twine to the corners. Next I drew few doodles with my Sakura Micron #03 pen and colored them in with Sakura Gelly Roll Pens.

I sketched the cupcake on to the center of the canvas and painted it with acrylic paints. I adhered my tag and then added highlights and shading to entire canvas.  The cupcake was still looking a bit dull, so I painted the frosting with clear glitter paint and that was it!

Hope you enjoy!

Time is just flying by and Halloween is almost here. I saw a spooky house on Pinterest that inspired me to paint this one in my little 5.5″ x 8″ watercolor art journal. This was a fun piece to do while watching TV.

I started with a pencil sketch and then outlined it with a Sakura Micron Pen 03. The next step was to color it in with the Kimberly watercolor pencils. I used Niji Waterbrushes to activate the colors. Once it was dry I added accents with Sakura Gelly Roll pens and of course my all time favorite, Stickles. Last I accented the cat with Ranger Glossy Accents and Voila! I had a new painting in my journal!

“Celebrate Everyday” Mixed Media

I created this piece from a project I saw in “Mixed Media Masterpieces with Jenny & Aaron.” This is such a wonderful book I saw in Michaels and just had to have it. It’s filled with retro style, fun, whimsical art that I just love.

The authors Jenny Heid and Aaron Nieradka did a fabulous job with their step by step photo tutorials for each of the projects. Although I didn’t have the exact supplies on hand, I improvised with what I had in my stash and this is my version of it. It was so much fun to create and I highly recommend this book!!!

For more information on Jenny Heid and Aaron Nieradka you can visit their blog at: http://everyday-is-a-holiday.blogspot.com/

Also, if you want to get a glimpse inside of the book, you can check it out on Amazon.com and here is the link: Amazon.com – Mixed Media Masterpieces by Jenny and Aaron.
