I’m having an absolute blast with these liquid watercolors. They are so bright and fun. This is Joelle, my latest creation. I’ve been enjoying the beach this summer and was inspired to give her an ocean theme.

This painting was made with watercolor paints. I drew the octopus freehand on watercolor paper that I created. I then carefully cut him out, distressed the edges and adhered him to the painting.

The seahorse and jelly fish were made with rubber stamps on watercolor paper that I painted, cut and adhered to the painting. For a little bling, I added Stardust Stickles to the seaweed in the background.

Freesia Whimsical Girl Mixed Media

I’ve been having fun playing with colors and papers while creating Freesia, my latest whimsical girl.

This painting was made primarily with watercolor paints and a little acrylic for the eyes. I used 3 different sized punches to make the butterflies which were painted with watercolors and then coated with Tattered Angels Glimmer mist for a little bling.

Working with watercolors is always an adventure. It’s funny how some colors react completely different than you expect and you’re forced to run with what you have. Learning to improvise can be one of the biggest lessons you’ll ever learn, lol…….

I’ve been away for a little, busy with lots of things going on, one of them being setting up my Etsy Shop, Color Explosion Studio. It’s a learning process but it’s coming around.

I also found some time to finish another whimsical girl, her name is April. I made her like the others with watercolor paints and paper. I also added punched flowers that I distressed and accented with stickles. The leaves were hand drawn on watercolor paper, painted and then cut out. She is very cheery and colorful. Hope you enjoy!!

I’m really enjoying the process of creating these whimsical girls and playing with my new supplies! This is my latest creation. I hope you like her!

Everything was painted with watercolor paints. I made the large white flower, the green leaves and the butterflies with stamps on watercolor paper that I painted and carefully cut out.  Last, I added a coat of Glitter Paint to the large white flower to give it a little bling.

In case you missed the last two posts for my whimsical girls, you can find them here: Flower Power Mixed Media and Feelin Blue Mixed Media. Stay tuned, more to come!

I had so much fun with my last post that I jumped right back in and created this enchanting girl. I’m still experimenting with my supplies but having loads of fun in the process!

In case you missed last week’s post, you can find it here: Flower Power Mixed Media. This all started with a fun class I took online by Susana Tavares called “Heart Whispers.” Susana is a very talented mixed media artist and if you want to learn more about her, just hop over to her blog at: SusanaTavaresArt.com.

The flower in her hair and the bouquet is made with stamps on watercolor paper which I painted with the same colors as her hair. Thought it gave it a little pizazz. More to come, stay tuned!

I took a fun online class by Susana Tavares called “Heart Whispers.” Susana is a very talented mixed media artist and you can learn more about Susana on her blog at: SusanaTavaresArt.com.

Although I can’t go into detail on how this piece was created I wanted to share it with you anyways. I’m not the best at drawing faces, it can be very intimidating at times especially when adding color.  But I worked up enough courage to create this lovely girl.  If you look closely at her, there are lots of mistakes but I love her anyways! It was a great learning experience and I intend on creating more. So stay tuned!

Valentine’s Day Cards Mixed Media

“Valentine’s Day Cards – Mixed Media”
Created by Sophia Vida

I was inspired by a pin I saw on Pinterest so I started this project with a watercolor wash on a 9″ x 12″ piece of 140 lb, cold press watercolor paper. Once that was dry, I added more color by distressing different areas with Distress Inks in Fired Brick, Mustard Seed, Picked Raspberry and Spiced Marmalade. Next, I used a stencil with Walnut Distress Ink. I also stamped several Valentine’s images with Memento Rich Cocoa Dye Ink.

I let everything dry well and traced a few different sized hearts onto my paper with a Dark Brown Sharpie Marker. I wanted the hearts to be semi-transparent so I painted them with FolkArt Metallic White Pearl Paint mixed with FolkArt Floating Medium. I used this same technique with the leaves in my journal that I blogged about here: Mixed Media Art Journal – Take 4. Then I added highlights and trimmed off the top edge from the spiral pad and cut the remaining paper into 4 equal parts.

For the next step, I created tags on the computer that I punched and distressed. I had bought these small 1.75″ red satin hearts on clearance last year and was thrilled to put them to good use.

I adhered my watercolor backgrounds to 4 cards measuring 4.5″ x 6.25″. The last step was to glue the tags and hearts to the fronts of the cards and  Voila! I had 4 unique Valentine’s Day Cards!

Enjoy!
