Great Things Journal Pages

Cloth Paper Scissors was having a Reader Challenge to create jaw dropping journal pages. Although I wasn’t chosen it was lots of fun creating them in my 5.5″ x 8″ Strathmore Mixed Media Journal.

I started coating the pages with Gesso. Next I adhered punched butterflies to the background from pages of an old book and sheet music using Matte Medium.

I sprayed a small amount of blue and green Dylusions inks into small paper cups and painted the background. I really love how bright and vivid these inks are. They really make your pages pop!

I then used fiber paste with a palette knife and stencil in the top right and left corner of the pages. After the paste dried I painted them with white acrylic paint and rubbed off the excess with a tissue. I also distress the outside edges of the pages with Ranger Black Soot.

I designed my mail box by cutting a 9″ x 3″ rectangle from bright yellow cardstock. To get the ends nice and round, I used a circle stencil and cut them out. Next I folded this piece in half and inserted a brad on the right side that said “I’m cute.”  This will become the front of the mail box.

On the back of the mailbox I created a small hole about 1/2″ down from the edge and inserted a 5″ piece of bakers twine. This would keep the mail box closed when wrapped around the brad. Then I created a 2″ mailbox flag from red cardstock and set both these pieces aside.

For the image I used a photo of my cocker spaniel puppy when she was about 10 weeks old. She was adorably cute and still is!  I glued the image inside the mail box and added shading with a sketch pencil. It still needed a little something, so I found 4 paper flowers in my stash and glued those above my pup.

For the base of the mail box I cut a 1.25″ x 2″ rectangle from the same yellow cardstock. I notched the top corners and glued this piece into the bottom center of my journal on the right page. Next I glued my mailbox and flag onto my page making sure to slightly overlap the box and the base. I then added a little shading to the outside of the mail box and base with a sketch pencil.

I punched a few flowers from different shades of pink cardstock. I distressed the edges and added stickles to the centers. Next, I glued the flowers into my journal. I used a colored pencil to draw stems and leaves.

For a little extra pizazz I punched a few colorful butterflies from paper I had previously created and glued them into the journal. The last step was to print a sentiment from my computer, cut it out and adhere it to the left page of the journal. I outlined the sentiment with a black Micron pen.

And Voila! I had a cute journal layout with a an opening mail box!

Tulip Art Journal

“Tulip Art Journal”
Created by Sophia Vida

I had a very busy schedule the other day but really wanted, no needed to create some art. So I made this quick journal page that was lots of fun and satisfying for my artsy side.

I started by sketching the tulips in pencil and then outlined them with a Sakura Micron #03 pen. I added a little shading and fine details with a Sakura Micron #01 pen. I also thickened the lines where needed with the #03.

Next I colored the sketch with a combination of Inktense and Kimberly Watercolor Pencils. I activated the paints using a Niji waterbrush. You just have to make sure to clean your brush on a folded paper towel when switching colors.

Once my painting was dry, I added two butterfly stamps and a little more detailing. Then I added a few highlights with a white Posca Pen. Last I gave it a little bling with Stardust Stickles and Voila! I created a fun page in my art journal!

Hope you enjoy creating yours!

Mixed Media Art Journal – Take 5

Happy November! I can’t believe Thanksgiving is just around the corner. Not sure I’m quite ready for all the holidays just yet. It seems they come faster and faster every year.

On a more fun note, I wanted to share my new journal pages with you. Journaling is a perfect place to showcase your artwork which is what I did on these two pages. I had created these two tags using Angel Mist Sprays, stamp embossing and various embellishments. Although they were a lot of fun to make, I really didn’t have a use for them so I thought it would be fun to give them a permanent home in my journal.

I painted the backgrounds with dark blue and pink acrylic paints. Where the two colors mixed, the paint turned mostly purple which is what I wanted. But you can still see a few pink streaks here and there.

When I looked at the tags against the background they got lost, so I added highlights with gelatos. I accented the pages with white acrylic paint and doodled in the corners and around the tags with a white paint marker. Of course, I couldn’t resist finishing it off with a little bling, so I added Stickles and that was it!

Hope you enjoy!

And stay tuned as the journaling adventure continues…..

Mixed Media Art Journal – Take 4

Journaling is a fun way to experiment with new things which is exactly what I did here. I recently bought a set of Golden Fluid Acrylic Paints and thought it would be fun to play with them in my journal. The colors were much brighter than I anticipated but I loved how they popped.

To tone it down a little, I decided to use my leaf stencil and a white paint marker to outline a few leaves. I then painted the leaves with white acrylic paint mixed with floating medium.

I added a little shading around the leaves with a watercolor sketch pencil. I also added accents with silver puff paint, gold metallic sharpie pen, green Sakura Gelly Roll pen, Sakura Micron pen #03 and assorted paint pens and that was it!

I highly recommend giving the Golden Fluid Acrylic Paints a try. They are so bold and bright and simply lots of fun.

Stay tuned as the journaling adventure continues…..

More Than Others Watercolor

This painting was created in Gina Lee Kim’s second online class called “The Versatility of Blue.” It’s offered through Cloth Paper Scissors and is so much fun to create.

Because this is part of Gina’s online class I don’t want to give away any of her techniques for creating this painting. But I will tell you how I created the paper for the sail boat because that was from my personal paper stash.

DSC_0005-Background Paper

I created this sheet by collaging a 9″ x 12″ sheet of Strathmore Mixed Media paper with pages from a book, sheet music etc. Once this was dry I used my stencils and a few stamps with Staz on ink to add some imagery. I added color with watered down acrylic paints and gelatos and a few sketchy lines with the Sakura Micron Pen #02.

DSC_0005-Background Paper4   DSC_0005-Background Paper5

After everything had dried it looked a bit dull so I sprayed the sheet with Pearl Angel Mist which gave it a little shimmer. Since I only needed a small piece for the sail boat, I’m putting the rest back into my stash to use on another project later.

I’ve been creating pieces of mixed media papers for use in projects instead of buying more printed cardstock. I like how it adds that extra creative punch to projects. Plus it’s just a blast making these different sheets because there are no rules except to have fun.

I highly recommend Gina Lee Kim’s online courses. They are lots of fun and there are 4 courses in total: The Power of Red, The Versatility of Blue, The Serenity of Green and The Energy of Yellow. I will be moving on to The Serenity of Green next, so stay tuned.

You can find a link to the Versatility of Blue and the 3 other online classes on Gina Lee Kim’s blog: ginaleekim.blogspot.com. Just click the image on the right side.

Enjoy!!!

I’m having so much fun creating pages in my small art journal. I really love “Romantic Homes” Magazines. They are full of wonderful images that are perfect for journaling. That is of course, where I found these images.

I made these pages with layers of paints, gelatos, paper doilies and doodles. For the butterflies, I used a piece of glossy cardstock with alcohol inks and then used a Martha Stewart punch. After I adhered them to the pages, I highlighted the butterflies with Stickles and that was it!

Stay tuned as the journaling adventure continues…..

Mixed Media Art Journal – Take 2

These are the next set of pages I created in my small art journal that I blogged about last week. If you missed my post, you can read about it here: https://just4crafters.wordpress.com/2015/08/08/mixed-media-art-journal/.

I created a lot of layers again with paints, gelatos, stamps and doodles. But this time I added a  few interesting elements. I had a dried flower and fern that I used to give the pages some interesting texture. Since the greens were a little too brown for my liking, I carefully added a little color with gelatos and Stickles.

I made a few leaves from a dried sanitizing hand wipe that I used to clean inks off my art desk with. Once I cut out the leaves and glued them on I highlighted them with Stickles.

The images I found in another old “Romantic Homes” Magazine. I love all the flower and garden images they in their articles. I glued the images and sentiment with Mod Podge but depending on the paper, the images sometimes ripple a bit no matter what you do.  So I chalked this up as added character to my pages. And that was pretty much it!
