Pure Joy – Mixed Media Cupcake

I finally had a little time to finish my second mixed media cupcake. You can find the first here: Find Your Bliss – Mixed Media Cupcake

I made this one pretty much the same as the last using an 8″ square canvas with layers of paint and paper. Bright Easter colors were my inspiration for the background on this canvas.

First I started by coating the canvas with gesso. Next I adhered pieces of text from an old book and a paper doily to my canvas. I painted the background with watered down bright colored acrylic paints in yellow, pink, blue, purple and orange.

After everything dried, I used a recycled cylinder and the end of a dowel dipped in white acrylic paint to make a few designs on my canvas. I also stamped a few flowers using Black Staz On Ink.

For the border, I cut strips of paper from my book and used a scallop punch for the inside edge. The pages of the book weren’t long enough, so I had to overlap alternating corners to make it work. Once I adhered these to the canvas, I added buttons with baker’s twine to the top and bottom edges. Next I drew few doodles with my Sakura Micron #03 pen and colored them in with Sakura Gelly Roll Pens.

I sketched the cupcake on to the center of the canvas and painted it with acrylic paints. I adhered my tag and then added highlights and shading to entire canvas.  I liked how the clear glitter paint added that little bit of bling to my last cupcake, so I decided to use it again on frosting and that was it!

Hope you enjoy!

Butterfly Girl Mixed Media

I’m really enjoying the process of creating these whimsical girls and playing with my new supplies! This is my latest creation. I hope you like her!

Everything was painted with watercolor paints. I made the large white flower, the green leaves and the butterflies with stamps on watercolor paper that I painted and carefully cut out.  Last, I added a coat of Glitter Paint to the large white flower to give it a little bling.

In case you missed the last two posts for my whimsical girls, you can find them here: Flower Power Mixed Media and Feelin Blue Mixed Media. Stay tuned, more to come!

Feelin Blue Mixed Media

I had so much fun with my last post that I jumped right back in and created this enchanting girl. I’m still experimenting with my supplies but having loads of fun in the process!

In case you missed last week’s post, you can find it here: Flower Power Mixed Media. This all started with a fun class I took online by Susana Tavares called “Heart Whispers.” Susana is a very talented mixed media artist and if you want to learn more about her, just hop over to her blog at: SusanaTavaresArt.com.

The flower in her hair and the bouquet is made with stamps on watercolor paper which I painted with the same colors as her hair. Thought it gave it a little pizazz. More to come, stay tuned!

Thanks for stopping by!

Valentine’s Day Cards Mixed Media

“Valentine’s Day Cards – Mixed Media”

I was inspired by a pin I saw on Pinterest so I started this project with a watercolor wash on a 9″ x 12″ piece of 140 lb, cold press watercolor paper. Once that was dry, I added more color by distressing different areas with Distress Inks in Fired Brick, Mustard Seed, Picked Raspberry and Spiced Marmalade. Next, I used a stencil with Walnut Distress Ink. I also stamped several Valentine’s images with Memento Rich Cocoa Dye Ink.

I let everything dry well and traced a few different sized hearts onto my paper with a Dark Brown Sharpie Marker. I wanted the hearts to be semi-transparent so I painted them with FolkArt Metallic White Pearl Paint mixed with FolkArt Floating Medium. I used this same technique with the leaves in my journal that I blogged about here: Mixed Media Art Journal – Take 4. Then I added highlights and trimmed off the top edge from the spiral pad and cut the remaining paper into 4 equal parts.

For the next step, I created tags on the computer that I punched and distressed. I had bought these small 1.75″ red satin hearts on clearance last year and was thrilled to put them to good use.

I adhered my watercolor backgrounds to 4 cards measuring 4.5″ x 6.25″. The last step was to glue the tags and hearts to the fronts of the cards and  Voila! I had 4 unique Valentine’s Day Cards!

Enjoy!

Mixed Media Art Journal – Take 5

Happy November! I can’t believe Thanksgiving is just around the corner. Not sure I’m quite ready for all the holidays just yet. It seems they come faster and faster every year.

On a more fun note, I wanted to share my new journal pages with you. Journaling is a perfect place to showcase your artwork which is what I did on these two pages. I had created these two tags using Angel Mist Sprays, stamp embossing and various embellishments. Although they were a lot of fun to make, I really didn’t have a use for them so I thought it would be fun to give them a permanent home in my journal.

I painted the backgrounds with dark blue and pink acrylic paints. Where the two colors mixed, the paint turned mostly purple which is what I wanted. But you can still see a few pink streaks here and there.

When I looked at the tags against the background they got lost, so I added highlights with gelatos. I accented the pages with white acrylic paint and doodled in the corners and around the tags with a white paint marker. Of course, I couldn’t resist finishing it off with a little bling, so I added Stickles and that was it!

Hope you enjoy!

And stay tuned as the journaling adventure continues…..

I hope the New Year finds you in good spirits and health! I took a much needed break over the holidays and enjoyed spending time with my family. But I still found time to play in my watercolor journal and create a few projects that I’ll be sharing with you.

I made this cupcake on an 8″ canvas using layers of paint and paper. I was inspired by beautiful sunsets and used these colors in my palette. I started by giving my canvas a coat of gesso. Next I adhered pieces of sheet music, text from an old book and a paper doily to my canvas.

I then painted the background with watered down yellow, bright pink and orange acrylic paints. After this layer dried I used a recycled cylinder and the end of a paint brush  dipped in white acrylic paint to make a few designs on my canvas. I also stamped a few flowers using Black Staz On Ink.

For the border, I cut strips of paper from my book and used a scallop punch. The pages of the book weren’t long enough, so I had to overlap alternating corners to make it work. Once I adhered these to the canvas, I added buttons with baker’s twine to the corners. Next I drew few doodles with my Sakura Micron #03 pen and colored them in with Sakura Gelly Roll Pens.

I sketched the cupcake on to the center of the canvas and painted it with acrylic paints. I adhered my tag and then added highlights and shading to entire canvas.  The cupcake was still looking a bit dull, so I painted the frosting with clear glitter paint and that was it!

Hope you enjoy!

Attitude is Everything Mixed Media

This was such a fun piece to make with lots of bright and bold colors. I started by creating layers of torn papers, paints and fabric on an 8″ x 10″ canvas. I stamped a heart border around the canvas and once it was dry, I distressed the edges with Tea Dye ink. I made the banner using a heart-shaped punch. I outlined the hearts with Stickles and added a few highlights with a Marvy White Gel Pen.

The birds were made using the same collage techniques as on my previous post “Sing your Own Song. I drew the birds on a manila folder and collaged them with torn pieces of paper, doing my best to stay within the lines. Once I fully covered the birds, I cut them out and adhered them to my canvas and drew their legs with a Sharpie marker. I added wings and outlined them with Sakura Gelly Roll Pens. Last I outlined the birds with dark purple Stickles.

Next, I painted grass at the bottom of the canvas with assorted green and white acrylic paints. I glued a few paper flowers in the grass and added rhinestones to the centers for a little bling. I then added highlights and detailing to the canvas where needed.

I love this quote by Khalil Gibran which really says it all….. “Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as the attitude you bring to life.” I printed the quote from my computer, cut it out, distressed the edges and adhered it to my canvas and that was pretty much it!
