Pure Joy – Mixed Media Cupcake

I finally had a little time to finish my second mixed media cupcake. You can find the first here: Find Your Bliss – Mixed Media Cupcake

I made this one pretty much the same as the last using an 8″ square canvas with layers of paint and paper. Bright Easter colors were my inspiration for the background on this canvas.

First I started by coating the canvas with gesso. Next I adhered pieces of text from an old book and a paper doily to my canvas. I painted the background with watered down bright colored acrylic paints in yellow, pink, blue, purple and orange.

After everything dried, I used a recycled cylinder and the end of a dowel dipped in white acrylic paint to make a few designs on my canvas. I also stamped a few flowers using Black Staz On Ink.

For the border, I cut strips of paper from my book and used a scallop punch for the inside edge. The pages of the book weren’t long enough, so I had to overlap alternating corners to make it work. Once I adhered these to the canvas, I added buttons with baker’s twine to the top and bottom edges. Next I drew few doodles with my Sakura Micron #03 pen and colored them in with Sakura Gelly Roll Pens.

I sketched the cupcake on to the center of the canvas and painted it with acrylic paints. I adhered my tag and then added highlights and shading to entire canvas.  I liked how the clear glitter paint added that little bit of bling to my last cupcake, so I decided to use it again on frosting and that was it!

Hope you enjoy!

Valentine’s Day Cards Mixed Media

I was inspired by a pin I saw on Pinterest so I started this project with a watercolor wash on a 9″ x 12″ piece of 140 lb, cold press watercolor paper. Once that was dry, I added more color by distressing different areas with Distress Inks in Fired Brick, Mustard Seed, Picked Raspberry and Spiced Marmalade. Next, I used a stencil with Walnut Distress Ink. I also stamped several Valentine’s images with Memento Rich Cocoa Dye Ink.

dsc_0001-valentinecardmixedmedia-background

I let everything dry well and traced a few different sized hearts onto my paper with a Dark Brown Sharpie Marker. I wanted the hearts to be semi-transparent so I painted them with FolkArt Metallic White Pearl Paint mixed with FolkArt Floating Medium. I used this same technique with the leaves in my journal that I blogged about here: Mixed Media Art Journal – Take 4. Then I added highlights and trimmed off the top edge from the spiral pad and cut the remaining paper into 4 equal parts.

For the next step, I created tags on the computer that I punched and distressed. I had bought these small 1.75″ red satin hearts on clearance last year and was thrilled to put them to good use.

I adhered my watercolor backgrounds to 4 cards measuring 4.5″ x 6.25″. The last step was to glue the tags and hearts to the fronts of the cards and  Voila! I had 4 unique Valentine’s Day Cards!

Enjoy!

Mixed Media Art Journal – Take 5

Happy November! I can’t believe Thanksgiving is just around the corner. Not sure I’m quite ready for all the holidays just yet. It seems they come faster and faster every year.

On a more fun note, I wanted to share my new journal pages with you. Journaling is a perfect place to showcase your artwork which is what I did on these two pages. I had created these two tags using Angel Mist Sprays, stamp embossing and various embellishments. Although they were a lot of fun to make, I really didn’t have a use for them so I thought it would be fun to give them a permanent home in my journal.

I painted the backgrounds with dark blue and pink acrylic paints. Where the two colors mixed, the paint turned mostly purple which is what I wanted. But you can still see a few pink streaks here and there.

When I looked at the tags against the background they got lost, so I added highlights with gelatos. I accented the pages with white acrylic paint and doodled in the corners and around the tags with a white paint marker. Of course, I couldn’t resist finishing it off with a little bling, so I added Stickles and that was it!

Hope you enjoy!

And stay tuned as the journaling adventure continues…..

Thanks for stopping by!

I hope the New Year finds you in good spirits and health! I took a much needed break over the holidays and enjoyed spending time with my family. But I still found time to play in my watercolor journal and create a few projects that I’ll be sharing with you.

I made this cupcake on an 8″ canvas using layers of paint and paper. I was inspired by beautiful sunsets and used these colors in my palette. I started by giving my canvas a coat of gesso. Next I adhered pieces of sheet music, text from an old book and a paper doily to my canvas.

I then painted the background with watered down yellow, bright pink and orange acrylic paints. After this layer dried I used a recycled cylinder and the end of a paint brush  dipped in white acrylic paint to make a few designs on my canvas. I also stamped a few flowers using Black Staz On Ink.

For the border, I cut strips of paper from my book and used a scallop punch. The pages of the book weren’t long enough, so I had to overlap alternating corners to make it work. Once I adhered these to the canvas, I added buttons with baker’s twine to the corners. Next I drew few doodles with my Sakura Micron #03 pen and colored them in with Sakura Gelly Roll Pens.

I sketched the cupcake on to the center of the canvas and painted it with acrylic paints. I adhered my tag and then added highlights and shading to entire canvas.  The cupcake was still looking a bit dull, so I painted the frosting with clear glitter paint and that was it!

Hope you enjoy!

This was such a fun piece to make with lots of bright and bold colors. I started by creating layers of torn papers, paints and fabric on an 8″ x 10″ canvas. I stamped a heart border around the canvas and once it was dry, I distressed the edges with Tea Dye ink. I made the banner using a heart-shaped punch. I outlined the hearts with Stickles and added a few highlights with a Marvy White Gel Pen.

The birds were made using the same collage techniques as on my previous post “Sing your Own Song. I drew the birds on a manila folder and collaged them with torn pieces of paper, doing my best to stay within the lines. Once I fully covered the birds, I cut them out and adhered them to my canvas and drew their legs with a Sharpie marker. I added wings and outlined them with Sakura Gelly Roll Pens. Last I outlined the birds with dark purple Stickles.

Next, I painted grass at the bottom of the canvas with assorted green and white acrylic paints. I glued a few paper flowers in the grass and added rhinestones to the centers for a little bling. I then added highlights and detailing to the canvas where needed.

I love this quote by Khalil Gibran which really says it all….. “Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as the attitude you bring to life.” I printed the quote from my computer, cut it out, distressed the edges and adhered it to my canvas and that was pretty much it!

Debbie Saenz is a very talented artist who created a fabulous mixed media tutorial entitled “Freedom” with step by step photos. You read all about it here on her blog at http://debbiesaenz.typepad.com/blog/2012/04/mod-podge-monday-mixed-media-tutorial-freedom-bird-in-cage.html

I originally found her tutorial on Pinterest and pinned it to my Mixed Media page. It looked like fun so I thought I’d give it a try. I collaged layers upon layers of papers and paints and stenciled some leaves in the bottom corners. I cut this stencil out from a box of Back To Nature Crackers. I really love this design and use this stencil quite a bit. You’ll notice this little leaf popping up in a lot of my art.

My favorite part was creating the bird and the cage. I drew my bird on a manila folder and collaged the reverse side with torn pieces of paper, making sure to stay within the lines. Next I cut it out and adhered it to my canvas on top of the perch. I added a few details and highlights. Once I was happy with the way it looked, I made the cage using glitter puff paint and set it aside to dry.

I finished by adding more details, highlights, doodles and embellishments. That was it! So hop on over to Debbie Saenz’s blog for detailed instructions and start having some fun!

“Find the Magic in your Heart” Mixed Media
Created by Sophia Vida

I created this piece for the Readers Challenge in Somerset Studios. The rules were to create mixed media art in black and white with a little color, if so desired. Although my submission didn’t make it in the magazine, I had a lot of fun creating this piece and wanted to share it with you.

I love black and white. It’s a classic and beautiful color combination. I’m always in awe of artists who create gorgeous art with these two colors. But for me, this was quite a challenge since I love lots of color. It definitely took me out of my comfort zone, but in a good way.

For this Project you will need:

– 8 x 10″ Canvas
– Golden Fiber Paste

  4. For more texture apply torn pieces of white tissue paper to your canvas. Partially cover some of the stenciled and stamped images. Let dry.
  5.  Apply a thin wash of Gesso over parts of your canvas, making sure not to completely cover the background.
  6. Distress edges of canvas with Black Soot Distress ink. Let dry.
  7. Using a black Gelato, make a wash and distress parts of your canvas. Let dry.
  8. Seal canvas with a coat of Matte Mod Podge.
  9. Cut an 18” x 2” strip of chiffon, wrap it around the canvas and tie a bow, cut off excess. Add fabric flower.
    DSC_0028_FindtheMagicinyourHeart_FabricFlower
  10. Adhere embellishments and sentiment to your canvas.
  11. Create a 3” heart from paper clay. Smooth over rough edges with your finger and a little water. Stamp a design on the front. Add holes around the edges. Roll the right side of the heart down. Let air dry according to manufacturer instructions.
  12. Distress the heart with Black Soot Distress Ink.
  13. Punch out large and small hearts from brightly colored cardstock, distress edges with Black Soot Ink and add highlights. Adhere to your canvas, just behind where the paper clay heart will go.
