Valentine’s Day Cards Mixed Media

“Valentine’s Day Cards – Mixed Media”
Created by Sophia Vida

I was inspired by a pin I saw on Pinterest so I started this project with a watercolor wash on a 9″ x 12″ piece of 140 lb, cold press watercolor paper. Once that was dry, I added more color by distressing different areas with Distress Inks in Fired Brick, Mustard Seed, Picked Raspberry and Spiced Marmalade. Next, I used a stencil with Walnut Distress Ink. I also stamped several Valentine’s images with Memento Rich Cocoa Dye Ink.

I let everything dry well and traced a few different sized hearts onto my paper with a Dark Brown Sharpie Marker. I wanted the hearts to be semi-transparent so I painted them with FolkArt Metallic White Pearl Paint mixed with FolkArt Floating Medium. I used this same technique with the leaves in my journal that I blogged about here: Mixed Media Art Journal – Take 4. Then I added highlights and trimmed off the top edge from the spiral pad and cut the remaining paper into 4 equal parts.

For the next step, I created tags on the computer that I punched and distressed. I had bought these small 1.75″ red satin hearts on clearance last year and was thrilled to put them to good use.

I adhered my watercolor backgrounds to 4 cards measuring 4.5″ x 6.25″. The last step was to glue the tags and hearts to the fronts of the cards and  Voila! I had 4 unique Valentine’s Day Cards!

Enjoy!

Alcohol Ink Coffee Filter Cards

Alcohol Ink Coffee Filter Cards

I found this wonderful little book at the craft store “Creative Colors for Paper Arts with Markers & Alcohol Inks” by Barbara Buechley, Jen Del Muro, Donna Goss, Paula Phillips. It’s a 27 page book filled with beautiful inspirational ideas.

One of my favorites was the coffee filter cards by Barbara Beuchley. Since I love working with watercolors, Barbara’s technique gave me the same look. I had fun experimenting with color combinations and using Ranger liquid alcohol inks as well as alcohol ink markers. The results were bold, vibrant colors that really popped!

The blending solution for alcohol ink can get pricey, especially when you use a lot. So to blend the colors, I used rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle and it worked beautifully. To accent the inks I used puff paints and Angel Glimmer Mist. I printed different birthday fonts on my computer which I punched with a tag punch. Last, I distressed the edges of the 4″ x 8″ card and tag with Ranger Tea Dye Ink and that was it!

Below are a few images of other designs I created. These cards are great for birthdays or pretty much any occasion. Hope you enjoy!!

Mixed Media Art Journal – Take 3

I’m having so much fun creating pages in my small art journal. I really love “Romantic Homes” Magazines. They are full of wonderful images that are perfect for journaling. That is of course, where I found these images.

I made these pages with layers of paints, gelatos, paper doilies and doodles. For the butterflies, I used a piece of glossy cardstock with alcohol inks and then used a Martha Stewart punch. After I adhered them to the pages, I highlighted the butterflies with Stickles and that was it!

Stay tuned as the journaling adventure continues…..

Mixed Media Art Journal – Take 2

These are the next set of pages I created in my small art journal that I blogged about last week. If you missed my post, you can read about it here: https://just4crafters.wordpress.com/2015/08/08/mixed-media-art-journal/.

I created a lot of layers again with paints, gelatos, stamps and doodles. But this time I added a  few interesting elements. I had a dried flower and fern that I used to give the pages some interesting texture. Since the greens were a little too brown for my liking, I carefully added a little color with gelatos and Stickles.

I made a few leaves from a dried sanitizing hand wipe that I used to clean inks off my art desk with. Once I cut out the leaves and glued them on I highlighted them with Stickles.

The images I found in another old “Romantic Homes” Magazine. I love all the flower and garden images they in their articles. I glued the images and sentiment with Mod Podge but depending on the paper, the images sometimes ripple a bit no matter what you do.  So I chalked this up as added character to my pages. And that was pretty much it!

Stay tuned as the journaling adventure continues…..

Mixed Media Art Journal

“Mixed Media Art Journal”

I started a small art journal that measures 5.5″ x 8″ and this is my opening page. I found this image in an old “Romantic Homes” Magazines that had an article about outdoor weddings at home which I thought was a great idea.

I gave the page a coat of gesso and then painted the background with gelatos. I added a script stamp, drew a few hearts and wrote a sentiment that I highlighted with Sakura Gelly Roll pens. Next I sprayed the page with Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists. Once this was dry, I stenciled my design in the top left corner using blue, green and white acrylic paints. I accented the hearts with Ranger Glossy Accents.

Using a small punch, I adhered a few butterflies that I made with green cardstock. I outlined them with a Sakura Gelly Roll pen and highlighted them with Stardust Stickles.

Last I adhered my image and outlined her with a metallic Silver Sharpie pen and highlighted her bouquet with Stickles. And that was it!!

I’ll continue to post pages as my journaling adventure continues so stay tuned…..

Every Cloud has a Silver Lining Mixed Media

 DSC_0004EveryCloudHasASilverLiningMain

Every Cloud has a Silver Lining Mixed Media
(created by Sophia Vida)

I made this piece pretty much the same way as my last mixed media post from June 4, 2015. My only problem was I really loved the colorful background and didn’t want to cover it up by painting over the negative space. So I decided to do it this way instead.

I used the Liquitex Gloss Super Heavy Gel to create texture. While it was still wet on the clouds, I sprinkled them silver glitter. I added yarn, buttons and a rhinestone on the door for even more texture. Last, I outlined the images and highlighted the roof with Liquid Pearls.

When it was finished, I couldn’t stop laughing. It reminded me of something straight out of a Dr. Seuss book. I would have to say this is one of the most whimsical pieces I’ve ever created and it was just silly fun.

Give it whirl and see what your imagination can create!

Supplies used:

– 12″ x 16″ Canvas Panel
– Assorted Acrylic Paints
– Oil Pastels
– Crayons
– Liquitex Gloss Super – Heavy Gel

– Round #5 Brush
– Palette Knife
– Aleene’s Tacky Glue
