Scandinavian Girl Mixed Media Watercolor

I recently enrolled in Andrea Gomoll’s online class, Facecinating Girls Around the World. In this course Andrea teaches you how to paint various girls with different skin tones and hair.

The first painting I did is this Scandinavian girl. Since this painting is a part of the Facecinating Girls course, I can’t go into detail on how she was made. But she was so much fun to create. I highly recommend her class!

Andrea got me out of my comfort zone by using a color scheme I would never have put together myself. But I absolutely fell in love with this color combination as I watched this girl come to life.

Andrea Gomoll is a very talented teacher and artist who lives in Berlin, Germany. I love her fun and whimsical style of painting and am greatly looking forward to learning more from her class. Visit Andrea’s site at  Andrea-gomoll.de to learn more about her.

Goddess Divine Mixed Media

This was a fun practice painting I made using watercolor paints in my 9″ x 12″ Strathmore Mixed Media Journal. I started out with a sketch, not knowing where is was going and before I knew it, this beautiful Goddess emerged.

The watercolor paints reacted a bit differently on the mixed media paper as compared to watercolor paper that I usually use. I got blobs of color that would quickly soak into the paper where I put it making it hard to blend and spread the paint. I also had to be careful not to use too much water as this paper was not as absorbent as watercolor paper and took a little longer to dry. Overall, I managed to save most of my blunders, lol.

I really love the background I painted using my glitter watercolors. This was the first time I used these paints and just love how they shimmer! It’s hard to see in the photos but it really sparkles.

For the outlining I used Micron Pens .005 and 01. I used a sketch pencil and various colored pencils for shading. The highlights were made using a white Posca fine tipped pen.

There are a lot of mistakes in this painting, but I love her just the same. Her bright blue hair is just fun!

Your Story is Unique Watercolor

This is another project that I made in Life Book 2018 with the help of a very talented artist, Katrina Koltes.

Since this painting is a part of Life Book 2018, I can’t go into detail on how she was made. I must say however, I’ve done lots of whimsical style faces and the thought of doing a more realistic one was quite intimidating. But to my surprise, I think I actually pulled it off!

Katrina Koltes is such a wonderfully talented teacher and artist. I love her dream like style of painting and can’t wait to learn more from her. Visit Katrina’s site at  katrinakoltes.com.

Rainbow Mermaid Mixed Media

Another quickie post today. I was finally able to finish the Rainbow Mermaid which is a course offered by Tamara Laporte at Willowing.org.

Since this mermaid is part of her online lesson, I can’t go into detail on how she was made but I can tell you it was all sorts of fun learning new techniques! This mermaid is very vivid and brightly painted. I was excited to use some of the new supplies I picked up at the Scrap Booking Expo this past April. I will tell you though, the dots are Purple Stickles. I couldn’t resist the bling, bling, lol.

Tamara Laporte is a super talented artist who I can’t say enough about. Love her work and her online course. Tons of fun! So make sure to hop over to her blog and check it out: Willowing.org

This is a short little post today. I’ve been hopping around Life Book 2018 which is hosted by Tamara Laporte because as usual, life got in the way and I’m behind on the weekly courses. But no worries, it’s all good! There’s no time limit or rush. Yay!

This project was part of week 2. I made this cute little Bear of Compassion that has all the love in the world to give when you need it most! Because this is a part of Life Book, I can’t go into detail on how she was made but I wanted to share her with you. The design is a bit different from the original project but this is what resonated with me.

Tamara Laporte is such a talented artist and I love creating in her classes. If you haven’t signed up for Life Book 2018, I highly recommend it! Hop on over to Tamara’s blog and check it out: Willowing.org

Inspire Yourself Journal Pages

 Inspire Yourself Journal Pages
Created by Sophia Vida

I wanted to share with you a fun and whimsical girl I created in my 8.5″ x 11″ art journal. I started by creating layers with printed tissue papers and other ephemera I had on hand. Once this was dry, I applied a clear coat of gesso and let that dry completely.

Next, I lightly sketched my fun and whimsical girl. I wanted the colors to really jump off the pages, so I painted her hair with a neon pink acrylic paint and the background in a bright turquoise blue. I painted her face with a combination of watercolor and acrylic paints in flesh tones. I added shading with water colors, sketch pencils and colored pencils.

I recently purchased a set of stencils from Faber Castel. I chose to use “Inspire Yourself” for this layout and outlined the stencil with a Sakura Micron Pen. I then colored the letters in with a black Posca Pen. I added a few stamped flower images and highlights with a white Posca pen and white pearl metallic paint in her hair. She wouldn’t be complete without a little bling, so I added Stardust Stickles to the centers of the flowers. And Voila! I had created a beautiful fun and whimsical girl in my journal.

Bird Fairy Art Journal

“Bird Fairy Art Journal”
Created by Sophia Vida

I enjoyed making my last fairy so much that I wanted to make another one. Working with smaller faces is definitely more of challenge, but tons of fun! I started by drawing a light pencil sketch in my 5.5″ x 8″ Strathmore Watercolor Art Journal.

Once I was happy with the sketch, I colored the background using watercolor pencils. But to activate the colors this time, I used a round watercolor brush with water instead of the Niji Brushes. I have to say, for this painting, I liked using the brush and water instead because it was a heavier, color saturated background than the last and the brush and water made it easier.

Once the background was dry I began coloring in my fairy with watercolor pencils. I added more color where needed and let it dry. Next I outlined her with Sakura Micron 01 and 005 pens. I added shading with watercolors and a sketch pencil. I added more detail to the fairy using different Prismacolor Pencils.

I wanted the wand to give off a little glow, so I painted around the star with white metallic acrylic paint. I used a white Posca Pen for highlights. And of course, she wouldn’t be complete with Stardust Stickles. And Voila! I had a cute little fairy in my journal.

Hope this inspires you!
